Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle: Ideas for Your Old Sweaters

A Cozy Pillow Made from a Red SweaterWhen the time comes to say goodbye to your favorite old sweater, it may be too upsetting to let go. Thankfully, even if you can’t wear your sweater again, you don’t need to give it up! As an alternative, consider upcycling your sweater into something else with a fun do-it-yourself project. Below are the items of easy, creative ways to repurpose old sweaters into things you can use all winter long!

Cozy mittens. Sewing a pair of warm winter mittens from an old sweater is simple and fascinating! Just outline your hands in chalk around the bottom edge of a sweater, tracing the outline around 1/4 inch bigger than your hand. Afterward, cut out the pieces. Ultimately, turn the pieces inside out and sew them together, leaving the bottom edge open. Flip your new mittens right side out and enjoy!

Decorative pillow. Nothing says comfy like a sweater-covered decorative pillow for your Forest Hills home! To design a pillow from an old sweater, just utilize a pillow for reference and cut the sweater to size. Afterward, turn the pieces inside out and sew them together, leaving enough room on one side to slip the pillow inside. Lastly, stitch the opening shut and add buttons or other decorative items.

Fingerless gloves. Another wonderful way to repurpose an old sweater is to use it to craft fingerless gloves! Both glamorous and functional, a pair of fingerless gloves can help you stay warm in cold weather while permitting you to type or swipe on your phone. Proceed by cutting the sleeves off the sweater to any height you want. Next, make a hole for your thumbs. Period! Adorable fingerless gloves you can use all season!

Boot toppers. One more styling option for upcycling an old sweater is to create some pretty boot toppers. Boot toppers can help keep your legs warm and protect your legs from rough seams or zippers. To make boot toppers, just cut the upper sleeve off an old sweater long enough to fit your calf and then fold the extra material over the top of your boot.

Headband. A headband is another easy and beautiful craft you can build from an old sweater. You may make your headband as thin or as wide as you like or design more than one for more options. Proceed by cutting a strip from the sweater in your selected width, then stitch the ends together to fit your head. Instant comfort and charm!

Pocket hand warmers. One important thing you can take with you to stay warm in cold weather is a pocket hand warmer. To produce one out of a sweater, cut several squares from a sweater arm or band, turn inside out, and stitch up the sides. Make a tiny opening and fill with dried beans, lentils, or pie weights. You can also add buckwheat and dried lavender for a lovely odor. At that point, close the opening, heat in the microwave, and slide into a pocket for toasty warm fingers!

Smartphone case. The likelihoods are that your personal tech gadgets don’t like being cold any more than you do! Protect them and repurpose an old sweater at once by making a simple smartphone or tablet case. Trace your tech device with chalk on the sweater, then turn inside out and sew, leaving one edge open. Place a button or other decoration for a cute and functional result!

Sweater wreath. Upcycled sweaters can be both lovely and functional when you produce a fun sweater wreath for your home. Using a foam or other wreath form, cut and sew your old sweater around the form to create an adorable wreath. Add some attractive ribbon or other final touches, and you’ll get a wreath you can enjoy all season long – and beyond!
